These are the old rughette alleyways of Riparbella: a cluster of houses already inhabited in the fifteenth century, which grew up around the church and outside the castle, forming part of the Borgo di Mezzo. Traces of its history survive in the medieval streets, with external staircases and underground passages.
The houses were the walls
The medieval streets ran through the rest of the town too until the 1800s. In this part of the town the outer houses formed the walls of the castle of Riparbella: you can still see the single way out, on the Montescudaio side, probably closed by one of the gates into the town.
Nine houses and five
Around the church of San Michele, in the second half of the 1400s, the streets Caldanella and Via Vicina are recorded with nine and five houses respectively.
The church of San Michele is the one that in the nineteenth century became the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista: the parish church still stands today at the start of Via di Caldanella.
