The place

A wood
that is lived in.

The forest estate Il Giardino — Scornabecchi covers 632 hectares across the municipalities of Riparbella and Montescudaio, on the first hills looking out over the Tyrrhenian coast. Coppice woodland, Mediterranean scrub and high forest of centuries-old oaks and cedars: an ecosystem that has remained intact for centuries, today part of the Agricultural and Forestry Estate of the Tuscany Region and managed by the Municipality of Riparbella.

Wild boar, fallow deer, roe deer, porcupines, foxes, badgers, hares and red squirrels live here; overhead there are buzzards and owls, and in winter thousands of wood pigeons come to overwinter. A section of around 290 hectares is fenced as a wildlife restocking area, where wild boar are reared and where guided excursions are organised for watching the animals.

The wood is certified FSC and PEFC for sustainable forest management — Riparbella is one of the few Italian municipalities to have received this recognition. Within this perimeter six very different ventures coexist: a permanent land art trail, a treetop adventure park, an association for electric sports and mountain biking, an animal garden devoted to inclusion, a bike park in the woods and an osteria

Paesaggi Cosmici

Permanent land art · Luca Serasini & Marco Ricci Del Mastro

“Do we still need the stars?” From this question comes a permanent trail of five land art installations devoted to the Universe, telling the story of the cosmos from the phases before the Big Bang to the constellations we know today. Wooden discs for the stars, lines for the links between them, reproductions of engravings from seventeenth-century star atlases — all built from natural reclaimed materials.

The trail runs along the main path, from the first to the second capture enclosure. Each work has a QR code that opens the soundscapes of Marco Ricci Del Mastro: 36 minutes of electronic and piano music conceived as meditation. There are 15 sets of headphones on site to connect to your own smartphone.

Il Giardino Sospeso

Treetop ropes courses · archery · magic wood

Eleven ropes courses suspended among oaks and cedars: fixed and hanging platforms linked by crossings of increasing length and difficulty, zip lines, rope bridges and traverses. Two courses are designed for children from 90 cm tall, three for children from 110 cm, six for adults — from blue to red, the most demanding.

There is always a safety briefing before you set off: harness, lanyard with karabiners, pulley and helmet, with instructors on the ground all along the course. As well as the trees, the park offers instinctive archery from age 10, the Magic Wood for younger children, treasure hunts, activities for schools, birthdays and corporate team building. Picnic area with ten tables and four barbecues.

Green Riders Experience

Onewheel · e-bike · MTB Experience · wine trekking

The sports association Kitewell ASD is based inside the Giardino, at Porcarecce, and uses the woods and the nearby wind farm as its playground. Its signature machine is the onewheel , the self-balancing electric unicycle: you start with fifteen minutes in the training field and work up to excursions in the green, across meadows, gravel roads and paths. As an alternative (or in addition) there are e-bikes , with hire on site for anyone without their own machine.

Electric motors mean zero emissions and zero noise: you may well come across fallow deer and wild boar along the way. The association also runs the MTB Experience project, a free course for young people from age 7 and for families, and organises excursions and wine trekking between the wineries of Riparbella.

  • Taster lesson Onewheel, 15 minutes, from €8
  • Experiences in nature 1h45 with equipment, €45
  • Hire E-bike €25 · onewheel €35

Biodiver City

A hectare of animals, nature and inclusion · since 2018

“The city of biodiversity” : a hectare of land inside the Giardino where hens, goats, donkeys, a pony, horses, Vietnamese pigs, dogs, cats and a Highland cow live together. An animal garden started in 2018 and run by a social promotion association, where disability is seen as a resource and teamwork as a value.

The starting point is always the same: caring for the animals, in a setting of listening without judgement. From this come hands-on workshops and shared observation, summer camps and a play centre, rehabilitation and social re-education programmes, volunteering for teenagers and partnerships with local assisted residential facilities. The variety of animals is part of the method.

Bike Park

MTB trail area of the Giardino-Scornabecchi · always open

The bike park of the Giardino-Scornabecchi is a trail area inside the woods : no uplift and no runs cut into the hillside, but paths that follow the shape of the ground, with dirt jumps and banked corners. You ride in an area under FSC- and PEFC-certified forest management, where biodiversity comes before the stopwatch — and where you really can come across a wild boar.

The tracks are signed and mapped and each has a name that tells you about the wood: il curvone, il cinghiale, il capanno dei cacciatori, le suore. Some can be ridden in both directions, others close longer loops towards Poggio Gagliardo and the coast. Around them is a network of about 65 km of trails open to mountain bikes and e-bikes, up to the 46 km Anello del Vino linking the nine wineries of Riparbella.

Osteria del Cinghiale

Restaurant and bar inside the Giardino · Loc. Il Giardino 44

It is the only place to eat in the estate, and it sits exactly where the trails end: a glazed veranda looking onto the meadow, tables outside, picnic area and barbecues alongside. In the kitchen, the Tuscany of the woods — game, mushrooms, pulses, wild herbs, home-made cured meats and the grill: honest ingredients, slow cooking, family recipes.

The signature dishes are pappardelle with wild boar and picio with venison, thick hand-rolled pasta with game ragù; among the main courses, snails. It is the natural finishing point after the adventure park or a loop on the bike — and the place where you may see wild boar on the other side of the fence while you eat.
