The war memorial.
Two bronze figures — Victory and the Hero — on a square looking out towards the sea. One of the first monuments built in the town in the twentieth century.
It is a bronze monument dedicated to the fallen of the First World War, with a commemorative plaque for those of the Second as well. The work is by the sculptor Ezio Ceccarelli.
Where it began
The monument was created around 1923 on the ground of the cemetery that had belonged to the Oratory of the SS. Annunziata, long since deconsecrated, and it was one of the first monuments built in the town in the twentieth century.
What it represents
A female figure, Victory , and a male one, the half-naked Hero sprawled on the ground, both in bronze, represent the allegory of Victory rewarding a soldier.
From the square where the monument stands you can look out and enjoy a beautiful view towards the sea: it is one of the loveliest spots in the town at sunset.
Piazza della Madonna, old town.
Always visible, in the open air.
Free; it can be seen from the outside at any time.
